Yeast infection is the result of the current fungi that lives in your skin. Areas filled with moisture would be right place for fungal growth. When you change the position where fungal growth has taken place then you can expect a yeast infection. Though the skin can handle any fungal infections, organisms can enter the skin through any break which might be existent.
You might find it silly, but yeast infection occurs to only adult women but never to children. Children get oral thrush but never in any other part of the body. Parents would surely have heard of any such falsehoods as their child was growing up. It is rather unfortunate that children often get affected by an overgrowth of Candida, like any one else, which may not be only in the region of the mouth. A warm and wet location is ideal for such infections to occur.
Causes of yeast infection: Where else can Candida thrive other than the diapers of your child who is just learning to use the toilet? Well, those lovable folds on the body of the child and the areas covered by a heat-trapping diaper. Well, not very different from thrush with the same white lumpy appearance and smells a bit like baking bread. This would help in the prevention of yeast infection.
Yeast infection affects mostly women because the genital area of women has more folds where Candida and grow and breed. Boy babies can also get affected by it since the same heat-trapping diapers are worn by them too. Think about it: the same environment which causes diaper rash would also result in Candida overgrowth.
Signs and symptoms of yeast infection
The symptoms of yeast infection would largely vary according to the site of infection. In the case of a vaginal infection, the symptoms include a burning sensation accompanied by thick and white or thin and watery discharge. Oral thrush can be manifested in the form of some thick white patches on top of swollen red skin in the mouth. Though it may not itch as it does with other outer skin infections, but the area becomes very sensitive and may even bleed with the removal of the white part. Since eating and drinking becomes extremely painful, children ought to be given more water than normal.
